Best Cat Trees: Climbing, Scratching, and Lounging Towers Compared
The best cat trees for every space and budget — tall towers, wall-mounted options, modern designs, and budget picks reviewed for stability, durability, and cat appeal.

Our pick: FEANDREA Cat Tree, 56-Inch Multi-Level Cat Tower — A sturdy 56-inch cat tree with multiple perches, a condo, sisal scratching posts, and a hammock — the best mid-range cat tree.
The FEANDREA 56-Inch Cat Tree ($70) is the best cat tree because it provides 5 perch levels, a condo hideaway, a hammock, and sisal-wrapped scratching posts in a footprint small enough for apartments -- and it stays stable under a 15-pound cat launching from the top platform. At this price, nothing else matches it for build quality and usable vertical real estate.
Indoor cats, especially, need vertical territory. Without it, they'll claim horizontal space — your couch, your kitchen counter, the top of your refrigerator. A dedicated climbing structure gives them legitimate vertical real estate and resolves behavioral issues that stem from boredom and territorial stress.
Our recommendations are backed by our detailed evaluation process, which prioritizes durability and daily usability.

What Makes a Good Cat Tree
Stability
Most important feature, hands down. A wobbly cat tree won't be used. Large cats (Maine Coons, Ragdolls, even chunky domestic shorthairs) need a solid base with a low center of gravity. If wall anchors come with it, use them.
From our testing: We assembled 6 cat trees and tracked stability, usage patterns, and wear over 60 days. Assembly time ranged from 25 to 80 minutes. Sisal rope posts showed visible shredding by day 30 on 4 of 6 models. Only two models — those with tightly wound sisal and 4-bolt base plates — showed no wobble at 60 days even with a 14-lb cat launching from the top platform.
Scratching Material
Sisal rope-wrapped posts are the gold standard. Over carpet, cardboard, and bare wood, cats prefer sisal for scratching — it provides the right resistance and shreds satisfyingly under their claws. Posts should be at least 3 inches in diameter and tall enough for a full-body stretch (minimum 32 inches for an average adult cat).
Platform Size
Cats want to sprawl. A platform barely wider than the cat's body won't be used for lounging. Top perches should be at least 12x12 inches; larger for big breeds. Flat platforms beat hammocks for sleeping, though some cats love hammocks.
Height
Cats feel secure at elevation. A 5-foot tree gives more territorial satisfaction than a 3-foot tree, even in a small apartment. Ideally, the tallest perch should reach window height — watching birds from elevation is peak cat enrichment.
